Brick walls will have a block foundation under it, and a block supporting wall behind it to give it the strength it needs to last.
When done right, it will have 42 inches worth of foundation and footing below the ground. Brick walls alone do not have the strength to be a retaining wall, so it is important to have the main structure be a block wall with reinforcement for stability and strength. From there you can dress the outside of the block up with the veneer of your choice.
