Polyjacking Vs. Mudjacking For Concrete Leveling

When choosing a method for concrete leveling, there are two main options, Polyjacking and Mudjacking. While both options will get the job done, some differences are important to how well and how long the repair will last.

Polyjacking uses high-density polyurethane expanding foam to lift and level concrete slabs. The material and equipment used are very similar to what is used for spray foam insulation; however, the foam used for lifting concrete has a much stronger formulation. The first step in the poly jacking process is to drill small holes in the damaged concrete slab. Once the holes are drilled, high-density foam is sprayed underneath the slab. This foam then expands to fill voids and lift the concrete slab back to its original position. The foam we use can expand up to 7 feet at each injection point and will harden to create a permanent repair for your concrete slab.

Mudjacking is a method for concrete leveling that uses sand, cement, and other materials to raise and level a slab. The materials are mixed into a slurry and pumped into drilled holes, similar to the process of poly jacking. Mudjacking is best suited for concrete in good condition but no longer level. However, there are many projects where Mudjacking is not the best choice. Mudjacking won’t work for large or heavy slabs and can erode over time due to the organic nature of the slurry.

This is why our team at Force Masonry Construction uses poly jacking for concrete leveling. Unlike mudjacking, poly jacking won’t degrade over time. It has a high resistance to temperature changes and is a permanent fix for sinking concrete around your home or business.

What Causes Sinking Concrete?

Problems with your concrete will only get worse as they are left untreated. Because they typically develop and worsen slowly, problems with your concrete can be easily overlooked. Our team at Force Masonry Construction knows that it’s important to repair damaged concrete at your home or business when you notice the signs.

Some of the main causes for sinking concrete include soil erosion, poor backfill compaction, and soil shrinkage. These problems are often invisible to the naked eye and are overlooked until they cause issues around your home.

The most common issue facing concrete slabs in the Central Illinois area is soil erosion. This occurs when water runs through cracks and joints in your slabs and washes the soil out from underneath. The voids caused by soil erosion often cause settlement and concrete cracks that need to be repaired as soon as possible. Other signs you may need polyjacking include:

  • Cracked Concrete
  • Uneven Sidewalk
  • Poor Water Drainage
  • Excessive settlement of slabs
