Maintaining a Classic Look
Brick may be durable, but even so, it still needs a little TLC. The porous nature of brick means it’s liable to absorb water — and too much moisture means wear and tear on your masonry. If you have a brick building with minor damage, further problems may be prevented with brick tuckpointing.
What Is Tuckpointing?
Brick tuckpointing or repointing is the process of brick restoration by removing and replacing mortar joints that have deteriorated between bricks. This preventative process can help prevent the need for brick replacement.
Brick tuckpointing comprises two main steps. First, the joints between the bricks are carefully ground down nearly an inch to remove the damaged mortar. Then once cleaned, new mortar is applied to the joints. The Force Masonry Construction team will be sure to use the correct mortar for your project to prevent damage to the brick. This meticulous process ensures a strong bond between the new mortar and existing brick and ultimately, the structural integrity, longevity, and value of the buildings we’ve been entrusted to repair.
When Do I Need Tuckpointing?
Moisture, weather, and time can all impact how quickly the mortar on your brick lasts. Over the years, minor damage to your building’s brickwork will become more noticeable. If you spot any of the following signs on your building, you may need our team to tuckpoint your brickwork to keep it strong.
- Cracked, dirty, or dark basement walls
- Exterior bricks with a washed-out color
- Discoloration or spots caused by outflows
- Damaged or loose brickwork
- Visibly damaged mortar
- Stairstep cracks
